Extension Assistant Professor – Water and Climate Change

The Department of Geosciences at the University of Massachusetts Amherst and UMass Extension invite applications for a full-time, academic year (9-month) non tenure-track Extension Assistant Professor position to conduct research, outreach, and education concerning Massachusetts water resources and regional climate change, starting Sept. 1, 2011.

A Ph.D. in Geosciences or related fields is required at the time of appointment. The position will involve a mix of teaching, applied research, and extension. The position will be part of UMass Extension’s Natural Resources and Environmental Conservation (NREC) program, but the appointment will be in the Department of Geosciences, which houses the Climate System Research Center and the Massachusetts Geological Survey. The new hire is expected to develop an externally funded research program, and to participate in collaborative programming with other Extension and Geosciences faculty and professional staff, Extension programs in other states, and occasionally serve on Extension or Geosciences committees. There are opportunities to collaborate with faculty in allied departments and programs such as Environmental Conservation, Civil and Environmental Engineering, Plant, Soil and Insect Sciences, and the Water Resources Research Center.

Potential areas of research expertise may include field-based fluvial or coastal geomorphology, surface water hydrology, or ecohydrology. The preferred candidate will also have experience or working knowledge of community issues and environmental policy and regulations. Teaching will include two course-equivalents a year, including an introductory course in spatial data analysis.

Applicants should supply a cover letter, CV, research statement, teaching statement, and contact information for three referees familiar with their research and teaching to: search@geo.umass.edu. For more information, visit the Department of Geosciences (www.geo.umass.edu) and Extension (http://www.umassextension.org) websites or contact the Search Committee Chair (search@geo.umass.edu).

Review of applicants will begin Dec. 15, 2010 and continue until the ideal candidate is identified. The Department of Geosciences is committed to increasing the diversity of the faculty, student body, and curriculum. The University of Massachusetts is an Affirmative Action /Equal Opportunity Employer; women and members of minority groups are encouraged to apply.
