postdoc position - William Sullivan

POSTDOCTORAL POSITION
Biochemistry, Microbiology, Host-Pathogen Interactions

Indiana University School of Medicine

POSTDOCTORAL POSITION available to investigate host-pathogen interactions during infection with the protozoan parasite Toxoplasma gondii. Related to the malaria parasite, Toxoplasma causes birth defects and life-threatening infection in immunocompromised AIDS or heart transplant patients. The successful candidate will investigate proteome-wide changes in lysine acetylation taking place in the host cell during infection. Lysine acetylation has rapidly emerged as a vital post-translational modification important for protein localization, activity, signaling, and complex formation. Using state of the art genetic and biochemical approaches, the candidate will investigate ways to disrupt lysine acetylation to make the host cell less hospitable for intracellular parasites.

Position requires a Ph.D., expertise in biochemistry & cell biology, and excellent communication skills (speaking and writing English). Experience in host-pathogen interactions and/or bioinformatics is a plus. Submit CV and contact information for three references to Dr. Bill Sullivan (wjsulliv@iupui.edu).

Located in downtown Indianapolis, Indiana University School of Medicine (IUSM) is the second largest medical school in the US and boasts an outstanding intellectual atmosphere and core facilities. IUSM was nationally ranked in the Top 30 Best Places to Work for Postdocs. Our lab is part of a larger intracellular parasitism group at IU that fosters innovation and collaboration. IUSM is an equal opportunity employer. Visit www.sullivanlab.com for more information.

Postdoctoral Position in Breast Cancer Personalize

IDIBELL

---
Major advances in the understanding of the genetic basis of breast cancer have been made in recent years, but these advances have not led to significant improvements in clinical practice. Moreover, knowledge of the tumor/somatic alterations involved in the disease is disperse, impeding transfer to the clinic and the development of personalized treatments. In this scenario, our group aims at integrating basic and translational research to better define breast cancer subtypes and develop personalized medicine principles.

The Breast Cancer and Systems Biology Group in the Catalan Institute of Oncology (IDIBELL, Barcelona) is interested in finding a highly motivated postdoctoral candidate to apply for a research contract funded by Spanish Association Against Cancer (AECC). The AECC call offers three possibilities, please visit www.aecc.es.

Requirements:
1) PhD degree;
2) postdoctoral experience (at least 4 years for B category)
3) strong publication record in cancer biology

Candidates should send a CV, motivation letter, and 3 contact references no latter than December 31st to Dr. Miquel Àngel Pujana (miguelangel.pujana@gmail.com)

POSTDOCTORAL POSITION IN MOLECULAR PARASITOLOGY

Indiana University School of Medicine

Multiyear post-doctoral position available to investigate the role of autophagy and a DNA repair enzyme in drug sensitivity in the protozoan parasite Toxoplasma gondii. Related to the malaria parasite, Toxoplasma causes serious disease in immuno-compromised (AIDS) patients and during pregnancy. We have shown that disruption of a mitochondrial MutS homolog results in multi-drug resistance and that this protein is part of an inducible death pathway that includes cell cycle arrest and autophagy. Potential projects include molecular and biochemical analyses of mitochondrial function in the resistant mutant, characterization of signaling event in the MutS dependent death pathway and investigation of autophagy as a drug induced death pathway.
Position requires a Ph.D., expertise in biochemistry, molecular and cellular biology, and excellent communication skills (speaking and writing English). Experience in molecular parasitology, DNA damage, autophagy, or mitochondrial function is a plus. Submit cover letter, CV, and contact information for three references to Dr. Gustavo Arrizabalaga (garrizab@iupui.edu).

Searching for Posdoctoral
candidates
(Juan de la Cierva 2012 Call)

Group: Molecular Biology of Pneumococcus
Supervisor of the position: Dr. Mónica Amblar Esteban
Research interest of the group: Our group is interested in the role of small non-coding RNAs as modulators of virulence in Streptococcus pneumoniae.
Pneumococcus is the main etiological agent of community-acquired pneumonia and a major cause of mortality and morbidity among children and the elderly. Understanding how bacterial pathogens respond to dynamic environments is a central aspect in microbial pathogenesis and there are increasing evidences implicating small RNAs as vital regulators of adaptation and virulence.
We have identified a big repertoire of small non-coding RNAs that are expressed in S. pneumoniae using next-generation sequencing. Now, our main goal is to elucidate how these small RNAs modulate gene expression in pneumococcus to adapt its metabolic needs during infection. The work will involve in vitro growing of bacterial cells under different stress conditions, construction of knock out strains, genomic translational and transcriptional fusions, analysis of gene expression through qRT-PCR and Northern blot, analysis of virulence, etc.
Requirements:
1.      PhD obtained on September 1, 2008 or later.
2.      At least 2 first author papers in international journals.
3.      Previous experience in bacterial manipulations and biochemistry and molecular biology techniques.

Información sobre el proyecto de Investigación

The CD300family of immunoreceptors is composed by six members, CD300a/IRP60, CD300b/IREM3, CD300c/CMRF35, CD300d, CD300e/IREM2 and CD300f/IREM1. All of them share an extracellular region comprising a single Ig-like domain and, with the exception of CD300a, a myeloid linage restricted pattern of expression. In addition to the expression on myeloid cells, CD300a is found in some subsets of T, B and NK cells. The Immunobiology group is focused on the study of the structure and function of the CD300 family of immune receptors, as well as in their involvement in different human pathologies.

Multiple sclerosis (MS) is an inflammatory demyelinating disease of the central nervous system (SNS) that affects more than 2.5 million individuals worldwide. The first symptoms appear between 20 and 30 years and is the main neurological disease in young adults, with higher incidence in women. Although the mechanisms underlying MS pathogenesis are still unclear, it is well known that patients' blood-brain barrier allows the passage of macrophages and lymphocytes to the NHS thereby initiating an inflammatory process. This inflammatory response includes activation of microglial cells and autoimmune attack against white matter oligodendrocytes. We propose, based on previous experimental data, the study of the role of the CD300f in the pathophysiology of this disease. First, we are working in the identification of the physiological ligand for this receptor, that we know is expressed by certain cells in the SNS. Secondly, the analysis of the role of soluble forms of CD300f in the
development of the disease by studying their expression in fluid samples of multiple sclerosis patients. Since activation of microglia and macrophages is critical in the development and expansion of MS lesions, the study of the mechanisms that regulate the activation of these cells may be of vital importance in the development of new therapeutic agents for the treatment of this disease.
