Postdoc disponible en Francia

Post-doc position in Developmental Biology Development and evolution of median fin in chordates

A post-doc position is available in the group of Sébastien DARRAS. The group has been recently established at the marine station of Banyuls-sur-mer.
We are interested in the molecular control of the ascidian Ciona intestinalis embryogenesis.  Our focus is on gene networks involved in patterning and differentiation of larval tail epidermis that gives rise to peripheral sensory neurons and median fin blades. We want to use the diversity of basal marine chordate species (tunicates and cephalochordates) available at the marine station to probe the evolution of median fin formation.

The post-doctoral research project aims at comparing at genomic and functional levels the  same developmental process in multiple species. Strong background in developmental and molecular biology, as well as curiosity are required. Experience with non-conventional model organisms will be appreciated.

Funding  by  the  French  Research  Agency  (ANR)  is  avalaible immediately, but applicants are expected to apply for their own financial support.

Postdoc in Bordeaux-France

Postdoctoral positions in the Royou group
“Control and dynamics of cell division”
European Institute of Chemistry and Biology,
CNRS, UMR5095, Bordeaux, France

Starting date: January 2013 or subject to negotiation
Duration: 3 years

Two post-doctoral positions funded by an ERC starting grant are available in Dr.  Anne Royouʼs group  (http://www.iecb.u-bordeaux.fr/index.php/fr/equipes/53-control-and-dynamics-of-cell-division)  at the European institute of Chemistry and Biology (IECB) (http://www.iecb.u-bordeaux.fr/).
The lab studies two axes relating to chromosome transmission during cell division using Drosophila as a model system. The first project explores the molecular mechanisms by which broken chromosomes are transmitted efficiently to daughter cells (Royou et a.,  Cell, 2010). The second project will provide insight into the mechanisms that coordinate  chromosome segregation with cell division (Montembault et al., JCB,  in press). The  candidate will work closely with other  team  members using complimentary approaches  including genetics, molecular biology, biochemistry and live imaging.
Candidates should hold a PhD and have a strong background in cell biology. We  are particularly interested in candidates who are familiar with the chromatin field. Expertise  in biophysics, microscopy, biochemistry or Drosophila genetics will also be welcomed.
The institute hosts young teams working in a multidisciplinary environment  at the  interface between Biology and Chemistry. The Royou group has access to cutting-edge  technology platforms available at IECB and the University of Bordeaux, providing state-ofthe-art mass spectrometry, structural biology and microscopy facilities.
Bordeaux is a dynamic city located in the South-West of France. It is 40 minutes from the nearest beach and surf spots, one hour from the Dordogne and 3 hours from the Pyrénées.

Investigating the toxic species in amyloid diseases: a structural perspective from solu-
                                                      tion scattering

Project description:
Protein fibrillation is associated with fatal amyloid diseases (e.g. Alzheimer’s and Parkinson’s diseases). Protein fibrils   may   damage   tissue   and   is   an   unwanted   reservoir   of   inactive   protein.   However,   the   neuro-degenerative effect observed for the mentioned diseases does not arise from the presence of fibrils, but rather from transiently formed non-native soluble oligomeric species. The structural events leading to these functionally central species pass through several un- and re-folding events that remain poorly understood. This is mainly because such nonnative structures are formed only in equilibrium with native and fibrillated protein forms and hence structural investigation is a significant challenge. In this PhD-project, we will further advance our previously developed Small-Angle X-ray Scattering data analysis approach (see Langkilde & Vestergaard (2012) Meth. Mol. Biol. for details) for a better understanding of the species involved in fibril formation, their mechanism of transformation, and the kinetics of the process. The candidate will develop an automated decomposition procedure, and apply it to several data-sets from different fibrillating proteins that are available in-house, supplemented with new experiments from the recently developed state-of-the-art synchrotron facilities. Protein systems related to Parkinson’s, Alzheimer’s and eukaryotic prion diseases will be investigated.

The candidate:
We are seeking a strong English-speaking candidate with a background in biostructural studies. Experience with software development and/or small angle scattering data analysis is considered highly advantageous. We welcome applications from all suitably qualified candidates.

The research environment:
The project is a collaboration between the BioSAXS group at the section of Biostructural Research; University of   Copenhagen,   Denmark   (see www.farma.ku.dk/br),   and   the   Centre   de   Biochimie   Structural   in   Montpellier, France (see www.cbs.cnrs.fr). The candidate will be employed by the Institute de la Santé et de la recherche Médicale  (INSERM), and will spend approximately half time in each of the two countries. The candidate will also obtain profound experience with high-quality SAXS data collection at the international large-scale infrastructures. The project is financed in concert by the Danish Council for Independent Research; Medical Sciences (Sapere Aude programme) and the INSERM.

HOW TO APPLY:
Applications - in English - must include:
     •    Cover Letter, detailing your motivation and background for applying for the PhD project
     •    CV
     •    Diploma and transcripts of records
     •    Other information for consideration, e.g. list of publications, peer reviewed and other
     •    Personal Recommendations if available

Please submit the application by email to Dr. Pau Bernadó at the following mail-address:

Postdoc position in Paris

Postdoc position: nuclear pores and stem cell differentiation
Institut Jacques Monod, Paris, France

Job description
A postdoctoral position is available in the laboratory of Valérie Doye at the Institut Jacques Monod
(Paris, France) to analyze the contribution of the nuclear pore complexes (NPCs) to embryonic stem
cell differentiation. This position is funded for at least 2 years, starting at the end of 2012. A salary
in accordance with qualifications, including potential previous postdoctoral experience, will be
offered.
Previous studies have revealed that the Nup133 subunit of the NPC regulates stem/progenitor cell
differentiation by an as-yet unknown mechanism (Lupu et al., Dev Cell, 2008). In this project, the
candidate will combine various approaches (including in vitro cell differentiation using Nup133-
deficient ES cell lines, cell imaging, biochemistry and gene expression studies), to characterize the
molecular partners and cellular mechanisms underlying the role of Nup133 in stem cell
differentiation. In view of our previous studies (Zuccolo et al., EMBO J. 2007; Bolhy et al., J. Cell
Biol, 2011), the interplay between cell cycle progression and cell differentiation will particularly be
investigated.
This project will benefit from the techniques and tools already assembled through a joint
collaboration with the teams of E. Lacy (Sloan-Kettering Institute, New York) and J. Collignon
(IJM, Paris). The Institut Jacques Modod further provides state-of-the-art in-house facilities
(imaging, proteomics, genomics-transcriptomics), and a highly collaborative environment
(http://www.ijm.fr/en/ijm/research/research-groups/).

Qualification:
We are looking for a candidate with a history of excellent research productivity and independent
thinking. Candidates are expected to have a keen interest in cell and developmental biology.
Experience and skills in cell culture and basic molecular biology is required, along with openness to
explore novel approaches; additional experience in stem cell biology and cell imaging would be
appreciated but is not mandatory. Excellent spoken and written English is expected. Knowledge of
French is not required.

How to apply:
Candidates should submit a full CV, and at least 2 referee contact addresses or reference letters to
Valérie Doye: doye.valerie@ijm.univ-paris-diderot.fr.
The position will remain open until filled; however applications received by August 30th, 2012 will
be given priority.

"Study of Ca2+ signaling and its biological function(s) in the Fas/CD95 apoptotic and non-apoptotic pathways"

A 2 years ANR-funded postdoctoral position will be available in the “Death Receptor and Tumor Escape” (DRaTE) (http://www.irset.org/?page_id=366) laboratory (Dir. P. Legembre) of the INSERM U1085 IRSET institute (Dir B. Jégou) located in Rennes, France. Preferred start date is between October and November, 2012.

Our group is interested in the role of the Ca2+ second messenger in the control of the life and death outcomes of Fas/CD95 stimulation (Khadra et al. PNAS 2011, Tauzin et al. PLoS Biology, 2011). We are particularly interested in understanding the molecular mechanisms linking the CD95 death receptor to the  modification of the intracellular calcium homeostasis and how malignant cells use this signal to escape the host immune response and/or the chemotherapeutic regimens.
This is a unique opportunity for a young scientist to apply new and innovative global approaches to the study of the early signal transduction events of the Fas/CD95. The ideal candidate would have proven skills and an in deep theoretical knowledge in Ca2+ signaling (hands-on experience of Ca2+ imaging would be a great asset), molecular biology, biochemistry and cell culture techniques.
The selected candidate will receive the full support from the team to apply for permanent research positions at Inserm and CNRS French research institutes (Chargé de Recherche). The candidate must be enthusiastic with excellent communication skills in English and a good team spirit in order to join a young starting team located in an excellent research environment with all the start-of-the-art core facilities. He/she will beneficiate from a highly competitive scientific infrastructure, agreable living conditions and comprehensive support by permanent staff members.

Extremely motivated PhDs with outstanding CV are encouraged to apply.
Interested candidates should send a motivation letter, a CV, a list of publications and three reference letters to Dr. Aubin Penna (aubin.penna@univ-rennes1.fr) and Dr Patrick Legembre (patrick.legembre@inserm.fr).

Epigenetics in alternative splicing

Alternative splicing is an important process to generate protein diversity that affects the vast majority of human genes. In the past few years, transcriptional regulators, chromatin conformation and non-coding RNAs have been shown to play a role in the regulation of alternative splicing1,2. Genome-wide studies showed a non-random distribution of histone and DNA modifications along genes, with special enrichment at exons. We recently found that histone marks directly regulate alternative splicing via recruitment of splicing factors by chromatin-adaptor complexes3. To continue these studies in my laboratory at the Institute of Human Genetics (IGH-CNRS), I am looking for a highly motivated and creative post-doctoral fellow with strong background in bioinformatics and expertise in analyzing complex ChIP-seq and RNA-seq data. IGH is a very stimulating international institute in an extremely charming and sunny city, Montpellier (South of France).
If interested, please send a CV, e-mail contact for three reference letters and a brief cover letter stating research interests and career goals to Reini F. Luco (lucoigh@gmail.com)

6) Medicine for Malaria Venture (MMV)

Title: 10th Call for proposals for Malaria Drug Discovery, Development and Clinical Capacity Building Projects

MMV welcomes proposals in the context of drug discovery and development or capacity building. MMV has identified four basic categories of indications for antimalarial treatment:

(a) The hits‐to‐lead stage for new families of molecules specifically addressing the key priorities of the malaria eradication agenda: transmission blocking and prevention of P. vivax relapse.

(b) Proposals for chemical series with the potential for P. falciparum chemoprevention or blood stage efficacy as a result of long‐half lives are encouraged, though the project should already have initial confirmation of in vivo oral blood stage activity.   Early target validation falls outside of our mandate.

(c) In the clinical arena, new chemical entities.

(d) Applications regarding capacity building to develop new sites for first‐in‐patient testing of these new molecules, including both blood stage, transmission blocking and P. Vivax anti‐relapse capabilities.

The prime area of interest for MMV is for agents that fall into the first category of affordable treatment for non‐severe malaria in children, pregnant women and adults as we currently see this as the area of greatest medical need. MMV’s ultimate goal is to be able to develop treatments that are completed with a single dose (certainly no more than once a day dosing for three days) so as to ensure patient compliance, have a low cost of goods and which are likely to have activity against artemisinin‐resistant strains

Deadline: Deadline for receipt of letters of intent March 15th, 2012

Further information: more information about the call and application procedure is available at http://www.mmv.org/research-development/10th-call-proposals

Title: MMV Challenge Grant

Proposals are expected to be at the concept stage (i.e. no prior experimental work is required) and to last no more than a year. These Challenge Grants will be prioritized based on scientific merit and according to the MMV strategy, and can constitute:

a)  Screening: testing the MMV Malaria Box against malaria and other parasitological assays

b)  Medicinal Chemistry: perform hit‐to‐lead or optimization chemistry on any anti‐malarial series

c)  Translational and Clinical Development: new methods to study or validate the inhibition of P.vivax relapses or the interruption of transmission

Number of Awards: 10 grants of 50000 USD each

Deadline: Deadline for receipt of letters of intent March 15th, 2012

"Biomimetic surfaces to interrogate carbohydrate-mediated cell trafficking"

In this multidisciplinary project, the postdoctoral fellow will use state-of-the-art surface biofunctionalization and in situ analysis methods to design advanced biomimetic surfaces. The biomimetic surfaces will be used in novel and quantitative biomolecular and cell biological assays, to study the role of glycosaminoglycans in cellular trafficking.

Cellular motion is guided by extracellular gradients of signaling proteins, so-called chemokines. A family of polysaccharides, known as glycosaminoglycans (GAGs), help organizing and presenting chemokines on the cell surface and in the extracellular matrix. How GAGs mediate cell migration is currently not well understood. There is reason to believe that the supramolecular presentation of GAGs (e.g. local density, orientation and mobility) is functionally important. The study of such effects poses a challenge, because the ability to control and characterize the presentation of GAGs, in vivo or in vitro, is to date very limited.

The goal of this research project is to develop multifunctional model surfaces that recapitulate selected aspects of the in vivo situation. State-of-the-art surface biofunctionalization and patterning methods (e.g. supported lipid bilayers, microfluidics) and a toolbox of surface-sensitive in situ analysis techniques (e.g. QCM-D, ellipsometry, RICM, AFM, ATR-FTIR, fluorescence methods) will be used to elaborate well-defined surfaces. The biomimetic surfaces will then be used for quantitative biomolecular and cell biological studies.

The team. The research project is part of an Excellence Chair, awarded by the Nanosciences Foundation in Grenoble to Ralf Richter, and will take place in a multidisciplinary team of four strong research groups in the Grenoble research area, led by Pierre Labbé (DCM, University of Grenoble), Hugues Lortat-Jacob (IBS), Catherine Picart (LMGP, Grenoble INP) and Roberto Calemczuk (SPrAM, CEA).

The environment. Grenoble is a pleasant city situated in the French Alps and is one of the most renowned scientific areas in France for biological and nanotechnological studies, providing a vibrant scientific environment.

Required qualifications and terms of employment. We are looking for an outstanding experimentalist with a solid background in physical chemistry, bioengineering, glycobiology or a closely related field. Solid experience with biosurface science is an advantage. The candidate should have keen interest in multidisciplinary work, disposition to collaborate actively with the project partners, and a strong drive to excel in a competitive international environment. The successful candidate will be hired by the Nanosciences Foundation, for the duration of two years, extendable by an additional year. The project can be started immediately. The working language is English.
