We are seeking 1 or 2 postdoctoral fellows (2 year terms) and 1 or 2 PhD students (3 year terms) to join in a recently funded project on modeling naturally occurring forest-grassland mosaic landscapes and their interactions with human interventions. Work will be based in the Global Ecological Change laboratory, School of Environmental Sciences, University of Guelph led by Professor Madhur Anand. The trainees will
have the opportunity (and indeed may be required) to travel to Brazil and/or India to conduct fieldwork and meet with collaborators, but the work will mainly involve mathematical and/or computational modeling in
Guelph. As such, applicants should have a strong quantitative skill set and ability to program in C, C++, Matlab, R or similar languages.
Applications should also have a publication record in ecological modeling, excellent
communication skills, leadership potential and the ability to work well in groups. Trainees may be co-supervised with collaborators (e.g., Professor Chris Bauch, Mathematics and Statistics, Guelph). Guelph is about one hour’s drive from Toronto and its many attractions and opportunities. Guelph has consistently been ranked as one of the top 10 places to live in Canada. Some examples of research areas are: developmental cell biology, the cellular control of phenotypic plasticity, the cellular basis of environmental sensitivity, epigenetics and the cell biology of symbioses and parasitism. This is a tenure-track position available at the level of Assistant Professor (pending budget approval). We are looking for an individual who values interdisciplinary research and welcomes interactions with colleagues from different biological fields. Applicants should have a Ph.D. and post-doctoral experience. The successful candidate will be expected to develop a strong, externally funded program of research and graduate training, and also contribute to undergraduate teaching in cell biology, genetics or physiology. Search for PostDoctoral fellow
Description: Applications are now being accepted to be part of a multinational project funded by the Centres of Excellence in Neurodegeneration (COEN) in the laboratory of Dr. Claudio Cuello, at the Department of Pharmacology and Therapeutics, McGill University, Montreal, Canada. The project entails the generation of new transgenic models of the Alzheimer’s pathology in rat, a species with numerous neurobiological and technical advantages. Using these transgenic rats, we will investigate factors mediating and influencing the earliest onset of synaptic changes and their implication in network dysfunction. The hypothesis is that dysregulation of the dynamics of synaptic plasticity and remodeling triggered by Aß and tau oligomer interactions underlies early impairment of hippocampus-dependent memory.
Requirements: Technically, this position involves handling of stereotaxic combined with pharmacological and viral approaches. The candidate should hold a Ph.D. and have a strong conceptual and experimental background in in-vivo research and molecular neuroscience. Experience with recombinant DNA techniques, in situ hybridization, neuroanatomy, immunohistochemistry, confocal microscopy, stereotaxy and rodent behavioral tests is desirable. The candidate should be proactive, independent, hardworking, productive, and enjoy working as part of a team. The most competitive candidates will be those with at least one first-author publication in the field and should be committed to eventually becoming self-funded beyond the terms of the current fellowship. Research Associate Position in Comparative Ultrastructure of Marine Heterotrophic Flagellates
A one year, part-time Research Associate position is available in the Botany Department at The University of British Columbia. This position is being created to provide high-level electron microscopy and group support for projects that examine the evolutionary morphology of marine heterotrophic flagellates.
The successful applicant must have a PhD in a relevant field and at least 4 years of postdoctoral research at the highest international standards relating to comparative protistology, molecular phylogenetics and single cell transmission electron microscopy. The successful applicant must also have a strong publication record in
the comparative ultrastructure of marine heterotrophic flagellates.
Research will be within the framework of the Tula Foundation Funded Centre for Microbial Diversity and Evolution. Additional responsibilities include the presentation of research findings at conferences, continued publication of research, and assistance with the day-to-day training of other research personnel.

Vanier Canada Graduate Scholarships are awarded after a competitive evaluation process.University Review
Students must be nominated by a recognized Canadian university. The scholarship liaison officer at each eligible Canadian university is responsible for co-ordinating the university review of their selected candidates and forwarding nominations for Vanier CGSs to the appropriate federal research granting agencies—the Canadian Institutes of Health Research, the Natural Sciences and Engineering Research Council and the Social Sciences and Humanities Research Council—in accordance with their university's allocation.Selection Committees
Once submitted to the appropriate granting agency, each nomination is evaluated by an agency-specific selection committee. Each selection committee recommends the top 55 or 56 candidates (for a total of 167 candidates between all three granting agencies) to the Selection Board based on the nominee's academic and research potential, as well as their leadership skills.Selection Board and Steering Committee
The Selection Board endorses the recommendations for Vanier scholarships put forward by the three granting agencies. We are a seeking a motivated PhD student to join our research team involving researchers from the Department of Biology at the Université de Sherbrooke, Québec, Canada and from the Centre d’écologie fonctionnelle et évolutive, Montpellier, France.
The proposed project will investigate natural selection acting on reproductive traits using long-term datasets with phenotypic and pedigree data collected in populations of blue tits (Cyanistes caeruleus) in Corsica, France. The project will benefit from data gathered over 10 to 35 years in natural populations to establish the strength and variability of selection across contrasted environments and at different geographical scales. A quantitative genetic approach will allow to link these selection patterns with genetic co(variances) displayed by reproductive traits, providing insights into evolutionary potentials of these characters.
The selected candidate will share his time between the Université de Sherbrooke and Université de Montpellier II. The fieldwork in Corsica will take place every year from April to June. Ideally, the candidate will have previous research and fieldwork experiences; skills in handling birds would also be an advantage. A good background in evolutionary ecology and biostatistics is also desirable.
The position is funded for three years, starting as soon as January 2011.

the Caribbean Research Exchange Grants (LACREG)
Program funded by the International Development
Research Centre (IDRC)
Purpose: The LACREG
program is designed to strengthen international partnerships and consolidate
emerging networks among academic researchers from Canada and Latin America and
the Caribbean. Its purpose is to support small collaborative research activities
which will contribute to the creation, dissemination and sustained application
of knowledge in the development process in at least one area of IDRC thematic
priority.
Eligibility:
Applicants from Canada and eligible Latin American and Caribbean (LAC) countries
are encouraged to apply.
The LACREG program applies to
collaborative research between Canada and the following LAC countries:
Argentina, Barbados, Belize, Bolivia, Brazil, Chile, Colombia, Costa Rica, Cuba,
Dominican Republic, Ecuador, El Salvador, Guatemala, Guyana, Haiti, Honduras,
Jamaica, Mexico, Nicaragua, Panama, Paraguay, Peru, Uruguay, Trinidad and
Tobago, and Venezuela.
Value: Support through this program will be
cost-shared on a 2:1 ratio by the program and the partner institutions,
respectively. The maximum value of each grant under this program will be $15,000
CDN.

International Scholarships
NEW information for the 2011-2012 competition:

- College and Undergraduate students must arrive in September for the fall session or in January for the winter session
Scholarship
Scholarship Types
Scholarships are for student and research exchanges at the college, undergraduate and
graduate levels.
In addition, study tours will be offered to selected graduate students to expose them to
Canadian governance, business and civil society in key priority areas.
Scholarship Duration and Value
- $7,500 CAD for undergraduate and college students for a period of 4 months
- $7,500 CAD for graduate students for a period of 4 months
- $10,000 CAD for graduate students for a period of 5-6 months
Mandatory and Eligible Expenses
Canadian institutions will receive cheques for the full amount of the scholarships stated in
the signed agreements between their institution and CBIE. Canadian institutions will
provide the amount to the recipient on a monthly basis or by lump sum. Canadian
institutions can take up to $300 dollars to cover administration fees once the recipient
arrives to Canada. Funds must be returned completely to CBIE if the recipient does not
take up his/her scholarship. The scholarship amount must cover:
- Visa expenses
- Economy, round-trip airfare
- Monthly living allowance
- Required books, supplies, and equipment – not computers
Once the above expenses are covered the remaining amount should be provided to the
recipient to cover any additional costs such as: ground transportation to the airport,
recipient services fees, telecommunications (long distance) for research purposes and any
other related costs.
- Financial reporting is NOT required from the institution or the recipient.
- Tuition is NOT an allowable expense; as recipient are registered full time and paying tuition to their home institution
- Scholarships are not renewable
- Scholarships are not taxable for either the institution or the recipient
Background
The Government of Canada offers scholarships to Canadian publicly funded universities or
colleges as part of the Canadian Commonwealth Scholarship Program (CCSP) and
Government of Canada Awards (GCA).
The goal of the Emerging Leaders in the Americas Program (ELAP) is to support the
development of human capital and a next generation of Leaders in the Americas while
strengthening the linkages between Canadian post-secondary institutions and the ones in
Latin America and the Caribbean.
Who can apply?
Publicly funded Canadian institutions must submit applications on behalf of candidate.
CBIE does not accept applications submitted directly by candidate or partner institutions
(foreign institutions).
N.B. Canadian faculty members who are submitting applications should notify the
international relations department of their respective institutions. By doing so, this will
assist with central coordination by the institution in the event that multiple applications
need to be prioritized.

Eligible Themes/Fields
Eligible themes of study or research are in disciplines that promote good governance,
prosperity, peace and security and economic development.
Eligibility
- Candidates must be citizens of one of the eligible countries. Anyone who has obtained Canadian citizenship, who has applied or is planning to apply for permanent residency in Canada is not eligible for this scholarship.
- Candidates must be enrolled full-time at a foreign institution in an eligible country and paying tuition fees at their home institution for the full duration of the exchange.
- Candidates already participating in an exchange program in Canada are not eligible.
- Candidates already enrolled to a degree program at a Canadian university or college are not eligible.
- Candidates should be proficient in either English or French.
Terms and Conditions
- The publicly funded Canadian institution must apply on behalf of the international candidate.
- An inter-institutional exchange agreement between the Canadian institution and the candidate’s home university or college MUST be in place at the time of application for an undergraduate student.
- While not compulsory, an inter-institutional agreement is desirable when applying for a graduate student. However, if there is no existing graduate exchange, graduate research applications which involve a new or established collaboration between professors from a Canadian and foreign university will be considered.
- More than one exchange program at a given university or college may apply.
- Applications submitted directly by the applicant will not be accepted nor redirected.
- A recipient cannot normally hold any other major scholarships granted by the government of Canada.
- Priority will be given to candidates who have not previously studied in Canada under a Canadian government scholarship.
- College and Undergraduate students must be in Canada by September for the fall session or by January for the winter session
- Graduate students can arrive to Canada between August 2011 and March 15, 2012.
- Failure to arrive by March 15, 2012 will result in the cancellation of the offer or agreement.
Role of the Canadian institution
Application process
- Submit the on-line application form on behalf of the candidate. Upon completion, verify data prior to submitting. To obtain a hard copy, prior to submitting, use the print function on your browser.
- Check the declaration and permission boxes.
- Enter the information directly into the field or copy and paste it from another source. Do not use the tab keys when entering the information directly. Certain web-based special characters such as HTML tags may also cause unpredictable results in the text, or prevent from successfully applying. The information will appear as plain text.
- Submit the supporting documents.
The supporting documentation indicated below
must be submitted as attached documents in a *.doc, *.jpeg or *.pdf format with the
online form prior to the application deadline. Do not send these documents by
regular mail:
- Proof of citizenship (copy of passport or national identity document with valid dates)
- A short letter in English or French from the department or university, on letterhead, dated in the last 6 months stating that the student is currently enrolled in a full-time degree program and will continue to be enrolled upon his/her return to his/her home country. Copy of transcripts, student card and letter of admission to the program are not acceptable.
- Letter of intent from candidate explaining reasons for applying and how the scholarship program will contribute to the student’s study or research
- Letter of support from student’s professor or the International Director at home institution explaining the nature of studies and how the student and the home institution will benefit from this scholarship program.
- Letter of invitation from Canadian supervisor indicating willingness to support and mentor the visiting student. This document is required only for graduate-level students.
- Copy of signed agreement with international institution. This document is mandatory for college and undergraduate-level students. For graduate-level students, if the exchange is made under a signed agreement, it is strongly suggested to submit it on the application form. Please also answer to application form’s history section.

Notification
CBIE will notify Canadian institutions of their successful and unsuccessful candidates by
email. For successful candidates, CBIE will send a Grant Agreement to the Canadian
institution detailing the value and conditions of the scholarship. This document should be
signed and returned to CBIE within 30 days.
CBIE expects to announce results by the end of May 2011.
Payment procedure
The scholarship will be paid by cheque in one installment to the Canadian institution, not
to the recipient, following receipt of these supporting documents:
- Signed grant agreement by the Canadian institution AND
- Proof of entry into Canada (copy of passport page with entry stamp, study permit or work permit) AND
- Proof of international or national medical coverage for the entire duration of the recipient’s stay in Canada.
These documents should be sent to scholarships-bourses@cbie.ca and include the name of
the program in the subject line.
The cheque will be sent to the contact person responsible for the scholarship program
specified on the application form.

Species at Risk and Habitat Studies (SARAHS) Research Manager. The Institute
for Species at Risk and Habitat Studies (SARAHS), opened as
a Centre inMarch 2006 at the University of British Columbia Okanagan. The institute¹s
goal is to enable interdisciplinary research on the structure and function
of habitats and populations of species at risk at local, national and
international levels. The SARAHS Institute manages a fee-for-service
facility called Fragment Analysis and DNA Sequencing Service (FADSS). We
are looking for a manager that will be responsible for the planning,
management, coordination, and communication within the SARAHS Institute.
The manager will be involved with the facilitation of research review
processes and the development of collaborative agreements involving
researchers, granting agencies and departments within the institute. The
manager will work with the director to set priorities and goals, prepare
budgets, and develop strategic research activities within the SARAHS
institute mandate. They will participate in writing grants for SARAHS and
working with the Development Office to secure external funding for SARAHS.
In addition, they will be responsible for managing the fee for service
facility, including the supervision of up to three FADSS employees. A
University Degree with a minimum of 4 years of related experience is
required. A M.Sc. degree would be an asset. Experience supervising and

Eligible themes of study or research are in disciplines that promote good governance, prosperity, peace and security and economic development.Eligibility
- Candidates must be citizens of one of the eligible countries. Anyone who has obtained Canadian citizenship, who has applied or is planning to apply for permanent residency in Canada is not eligible for this scholarship.
- Candidates must be enrolled full-time at a foreign institution in an eligible country and paying tuition fees at their home institution for the full duration of the exchange.
- Candidates already participating in an exchange program in Canada are not eligible.
- Candidates already enrolled to a degree program at a Canadian university or college are not eligible.
- Candidates should be proficient in either English or French.
Terms and Conditions
- The publicly funded Canadian institution must apply on behalf of the international candidate.
- An inter-institutional exchange agreement between the Canadian institution and the candidate’s home university or college MUST be in place at the time of application for an undergraduate student.
- While not compulsory, an inter-institutional agreement is desirable when applying for a graduate student. However, if there is no existing graduate exchange, graduate research applications which involve a new or established collaboration between professors from a Canadian and foreign university will be considered.
- More than one exchange program at a given university or college may apply.
- Applications submitted directly by the applicant will not be accepted nor redirected.
- A recipient cannot normally hold any other major scholarships granted by the government of Canada.
- Priority will be given to candidates who have not previously studied in Canada under a Canadian government scholarship.
- College and Undergraduate students must be in Canada by September for the fall session or by January for the winter session
- Graduate students can arrive to Canada between August 2011 and March 15, 2012.
- Failure to arrive by March 15, 2012 will result in the cancellation of the offer or agreement.
Role of the Canadian institution
Application process
- Submit the on-line application form on behalf of the candidate. Upon completion, verify data prior to submitting. To obtain a hard copy, prior to submitting, use the print function on your browser.
- Check the declaration and permission boxes.
- Enter the information directly into the field or copy and paste it from another source. Do not use the tab keys when entering the information directly. Certain web-based special characters such as HTML tags may also cause unpredictable results in the text, or prevent from successfully applying. The information will appear as plain text.
- Submit
the supporting documents. The supporting documentation indicated below must be
submitted as attached documents in a *.doc, *.jpeg or *.pdf format with the
online form prior to the application deadline. Do not send these
documents by regular mail:
- Proof of citizenship (copy of passport or national identity document with valid dates)
- A short letter in English or French from the department or university, on letterhead, dated in the last 6 months stating that the student is currently enrolled in a full-time degree program and will continue to be enrolled upon his/her return to his/her home country. Copy of transcripts, student card and letter of admission to the program are not acceptable.
- Letter of intent from candidate explaining reasons for applying and how the scholarship program will contribute to the student’s study or research
- Letter of support from student’s professor or the International Director at home institution explaining the nature of studies and how the student and the home institution will benefit from this scholarship program.
- Letter of invitation from Canadian supervisor indicating willingness to support and mentor the visiting student. This document is required only for graduate-level students.
- Copy of signed agreement with international institution. This document is mandatory for college and undergraduate-level students. For graduate-level students, if the exchange is made under a signed agreement, it is strongly suggested to submit it on the application form. Please also answer to application form’s history section.

Notification
CBIE will notify Canadian institutions of their successful and unsuccessful candidates by email. For successful candidates, CBIE will send a Grant Agreement to the Canadian institution detailing the value and conditions of the scholarship. This document should be signed and returned to CBIE within 30 days.CBIE expects to announce results by the end of May 2011.
Payment procedure
The scholarship will be paid by cheque in one installment to the Canadian institution, not to the recipient, following receipt of these supporting documents:- Signed grant agreement by the Canadian institution AND
- Proof of entry into Canada (copy of passport page with entry stamp, study permit or work permit) AND
- Proof of international or national medical coverage for the entire duration of the recipient’s stay in Canada.
The cheque will be sent to the contact person responsible for the scholarship program specified on the application form.
Please note that CBIE requires up to 2 weeks to process payments.
