Offre de PhD studentship in Virology at the University of Glasgow
Available from October 2012
Applications are invited for a MRC‐funded PhD studentship to be held in the laboratories of Dr.
Pablo Murcia at the MRC‐University of Glasgow Centre for Virus Research (CVR;
http://www.cvr.ac.uk/) and Dr. Paul Digard at the Roslin Institute (http://www.roslin.ed.ac.uk/).
Dr. Murcia’s laboratory studies the evolutionary and molecular basis of influenza emergence,
using Equine (EIV) and Canine (CIV) influenza viruses as model systems. Dr Digard’s laboratory is
interested in influenza pathogenesis and host range from a cell biology and molecular perspective.
Both laboratories are well equipped to provide training in several molecular and cell biology techniques, as well as in classical influenza virology. The student will join a project using reverse
genetics technology to map the molecular determinants that allowed the emergence of CIV.
The successful student will initially be enrolled onto a programme consisting of two laboratory
rotations and skills training in Year 1 (leading to the award of MRes), followed by a PhD project in
Years 2‐4. For those who already have a relevant Masters degree or research experience, direct
entry onto the 3‐Year PhD project is possible. Applicants should have, or expect to obtain, a first
or upper second class honours degree in a relevant biological discipline, and a proven ability to
interpret original scientific literature. Previous laboratory experience in virology and/or molecular
biology would be an advantage.
Stipends will be in the range of £13,500 ‐ £14,000 per annum, and the award includes payment of
University fees. MRC residence eligibility requirements apply and applications will be accepted
from UK citizens or EU nationals who have lived in the UK for a minimum of 3 years immediately
prior to application. For further information on eligibility please refer to: MRC Studentship
Eligibility
Interested applicants should send their Curriculum Vitae, a covering letter explaining their
suitability for a PhD studentship and their interest in this research area, and the contact details of
two academic referees (including e‐mail addresses), to Mrs. Sandra Lyden
(sandra.lyden@glasgow.ac.uk) no later than 20th July 2012. Informal enquiries can be addressed
to the PIs via email (pablo.murcia@glasgow.ac.uk or paul.digard@roslin.ed.ac.uk).
Interviews are anticipated to take place in early August 2012.
