Description: A Master’s research assistantship is available starting fall 2011
at Florida Gulf
Coast University
to study the population structure of hingeback tortoises (Kinixys spp) in Kakum
National Park in western Ghana .
The student selected for this position will spend 6-7 months in Ghana to work
with the Ghana Wildlife Division and the local community to explore the impact
of poaching on tortoise populations in the park. The student will also be
expected to conduct education programs in the community. Responsibilities
include completing the academic requirements for a master’s degree, writing a
research proposal, coordinating the tortoise research and education programs in
Ghana ,
and disseminating the findings to professional conferences.
Qualifications: The successful applicant will have a B/S degree in biology,
ecology, wildlife biology, or a closely related field and will meet the minimum
requirements for admission into the graduate program at Florida Gulf
Coast University .
Preference will be given to the applicant with a strong background in
population ecology, biogeography, spatial ecology, or wildlife
management. Good interpersonal skills are required as well as the ability
to work with a team under little supervision. The applicant must be able
to work in hot and humid conditions in a tropical rainforest that is home to
potentially dangerous wildlife such as scorpions, mambas, vipers, and forest
elephants. Students with travel experience, especially to the tropics or Africa , are encouraged to apply.
Compensation: $10,000 for one year. Tuition waiver cannot be guaranteed at
this time but historically has always been given to RA positions (decided each
year in the spring). Tuition waiver will be requested and secured before
student must commit.
