EXPERIENCED RESEARCHERS IN GEOINFORMATION

(Marie Curie International Incoming Fellowship Grants)

Ref. 3D-IIF-MCGRANT-20120505

The Institute of Geomatics (IG) is a non-profit public consortium of the autonomous Government of Catalonia (Gencat) and the Technical University of Catalonia (UPC). Its mission is to promote and develop Geomatics, through applied research and education, for the general benefit of society. The IG constitutes a multidisciplinary team with strong backgrounds in cartography, geodesy, geography, mathematics, physics, electronic engineering, civil engineering and computer science. The IG has a strong track record of cooperation with other academic groups, with private companies and with public administration at international level, with partners in Europe and the Americas. The IG is located in Castelldefels (Spain), about 30 minutes from Barcelona City centre.

1       Call objective

The aim of this call is the pre-selection carried out by the Institut of Geomatics of experienced research candidates with potential to win an International Incoming Fellowship (IIF), a Marie Curie individual action grant within the European People Seventh Framework Programme (FP7). Therefore, candidates for a Research position with promising advanced scientific curriculum are encouraged to present their candidature. The creation of a Research position for the candidate within the IG will depend on the outcome of the open competitive IIF joint initiative and shall require a central contribution of the candidate during the proposal generation. The project shall be scientifically exigent and must promise a clear advance of the candidate’s career.

2       Candidate profile

The following requirements are minimum requirements of the call, expected to be rather competitive. Therefore, priority will be given to candidates with an outstanding track record and innovative research vision.

•       Academic degree:
-       A doctorate degree in Geomatics or related disciplines (PhD in computer science, engineering, geography, mathematics, etc.)
•       Requirements and expertise:
-       Proven track record as a researcher with clear relationship to the “Scientific background and terms of research references for candidates” described
-       Significant record of scientific publications is required and the candidate is supposed to have at least 4 publications in international and peer-reviewed journals.
•       Mobility:
-       Candidates can be of any nationality
-       Candidates must be based on a Third Country  (not pertaining neither to the EU Member States nor to  Associated Countries).
-       Experienced researchers must not have resided or carried out their main activity in Spain for more than 12 months within the 3 last years
-       Active researchers based in one of the ICPCs may contemplate a return phase
•       Language skills:
-       The candidate is expected to communicate fluently and flawlessly in English

3       Scientific background and terms of research references for candidates

The candidate will have the opportunity to initiate and conduct research within the 3D Geo-Visualization and Modelling Unit, in the dynamic and challenging domain of visualization and mixed reality for geospatial applications. The research should align with at least one of the following terms of reference defined for the unit:
•       Assimilation and interpretation of geo-data into 3D models (including GIS, LIDAR and photogrammetric data)
•       Modelling, management and analysis of 3D geospatial and spatio-temporal data (e.g. 3D city models, environment models, urban simulation)
•       3D geo-visualization, novel 3D visualization techniques, 3D generalization and multi-scale representation, mixed and augmented reality visualization
•       Interaction techniques for geo-spatial data, e.g. tangible interaction, multi-touch interaction, mobile interaction

4       Marie Curie IIF Funding

The competitive Marie Curie IIF funds  the aims to reinforce the scientific excellence of the Member States and Associated Countries, through knowledge sharing with in-coming top-class researchers active in an Other Third Country to work on research projects in Europe, with the view to developing mutually-beneficial research co-operation between Europe and the Other Third Country. It aims to encourage these researchers to plan their period of international mobility within the framework of a professional project enhancing the possibility of future collaborative research links with European researchers and research organizations. The proposal is to be designed jointly by the candidate and the host institution and presented to the EU competitive programme. The Marie Curie IIF financial support is provided for a period of 12 to 36 months, with an incoming phase of 12 to 24 months and a possible return phase of 12 months. Funding cover a monthly living and mobility allowances (con
sidering family obligations, social security and taxations) and a contribution to research/transfer of knowledge expenses (conferences and training courses, fees for scientific journals, consumables, etc.). If a researcher has been active in research in one of the ICPCs , this action may contemplate a return phase, and it may include provisions for a return host organization to support the integration of the researcher in the ICPC.
