PhD Position in Molecular Virology (Berlin)

PhD POSITION IN MOLECULAR VIROLOGY IN BERLIN AVAILABLE
in the lab of Prof. Christian Hagemeier working on VIRUS-HOST INTERACTIONS
Institute:
Charité Universitätsmedizin
Labor für Pädiatrische Molekularbiologie
Charité is a leading research institution in the field of Molecular Medicine with an international, stimulating and interactive environment and cutting edge infrastructure core facilities.
Research topic:
Human cytomegalovirus (HCMV) is a wide-spread pathogen that under normal conditions establishes a latent, non-productive infection in its host. In immunocompromised or immunonaive individuals, however, the lytic mode of infection is favoured which can result in severe disease. The control of viral immediate early (IE) gene expression is critical for the decision between the latent and lytic mode of infection and therefore represents an active focus of research. Our lab has discovered that Cyclin A-associated kinase activity acts as a potent inhibitor of IE gene expression and has further defined the Cyclin A substrate mediating this effect (unpublished). The aim of the PhD project is to characterize this virus-host interaction at the molecular level and to study its contribution to HCMV latency in hematopoietic progenitor cells.
