Biodiversity Data Specialist (Frankfurt)

Senckenberg Gesellschaft für Naturforschung has an international reputation in all fields of Natural
History research. It runs six research institutes and two museums in Germany. The Biodiversity and
Climate Research Centre (BiK-F) is a new interdisciplinary institute with the mission to carry out
internationally outstanding research on the interactions of biodiversity and climate change. It has been
founded by the Senckenberg Gesellschaft für Naturforschung, the Goethe-University Frankfurt am Main,
and other partners. The Centre is funded by the Federal State of Hesse through its Initiative for the
Development of Scientific and Economic Excellence (LOEWE). Senckenberg Gesellschaft für
Naturforschung and BiK-F jointly invite applications for the position of a
Biodiversity Data Specialist
[Ref. #01-11027]
The successful applicant should mine and improve organismic data sources within the Senckenberg
Gesellschaft für Naturforschung and beyond for their use in interdisciplinary biodiversity science based on
state-of-art environmental and remote sensing data, as well as modelling and statistical tools.
The specialist will liaise with data providers, especially the collection database SeSam and facilitate or
execute data integration in the international project “Map of Life” (http://www.mappinglife.org/). She or he
will coordinate or contribute to basic research for publication in high-ranking international journals.
The specialist will work closely with an international team of researchers, representing expertise in
species distribution modelling, ecological time series analysis, Bayesian statistics, remote sensing and
database development. On the long-term and depending on funding, the specialist will develop,
implement and oversee a general integrated biodiversity data base concept for BiK-F and the
Senckenberg Gesellschaft für Naturforschung. Acquisition of additional external funding is highly
encouraged.
The applicant must hold a Ph.D. in ecology, geography, bio-informatics or a related field and have a solid
background in basic or applied biodiversity research and biological database development and
management. Experiences in statistical analyses of geographic range data or species distribution
modelling will be of advantage. The applicant is expected to work independently, to have excellent
management skills, to have very strong oral and written communication skills and the willingness to
collaborate with a variety of partners, ranging from data providers to statisticians. She or he must have a
solid publication record and prove the capability for continued publishing in high-ranking international
scientific journals. Salary and benefits are according to a public service position in Germany and depend
on skills and experience (TV-H E13 or E14). The Research Centre BiK-F advocates gender equality.

The contract shall start as soon as possible and will run for 24 months. Prolongation is possible,
depending on the accomplishments of the applicant and on the availability of funding. The duty station will
