Scholarship Details

Overview

The Vanier Canada Graduate Scholarship (Vanier CGS) was created to attract and retain world-class doctoral students and to establish Canada as a global centre of excellence in research and higher learning. It is worth $50,000 per year for three years and is available to both Canadian and international PhD students studying at Canadian universities. For more information, see also:

Deadline

November 9, 2011 (8:00 p.m. Eastern Time)

All nominations from Canadian universities must be submitted via ResearchNet and received by the federal research granting agencies by the deadline date.

Review Process

Vanier Canada Graduate Scholarships are awarded after a competitive evaluation process.

University Review

Students must be nominated by a recognized Canadian university. The scholarship liaison officer at each eligible Canadian university is responsible for co-ordinating the university review of their selected candidates and forwarding nominations for Vanier CGSs to the appropriate federal research granting agencies—the Canadian Institutes of Health Research, the Natural Sciences and Engineering Research Council and the Social Sciences and Humanities Research Council—in accordance with their university's allocation.

Selection Committees

Once submitted to the appropriate granting agency, each nomination is evaluated by an agency-specific selection committee. Each selection committee recommends the top 55 or 56 candidates (for a total of 167 candidates between all three granting agencies) to the Selection Board based on the nominee's academic and research potential, as well as their leadership skills.

Selection Board and Steering Committee

The Selection Board endorses the recommendations for Vanier scholarships put forward by the three granting agencies. The Selection Board also oversees the program's process, policies, and results to ensure that the program achieves its objectives.

The Steering Committee—made up of the presidents of the three federal granting agencies, and the deputy ministers of Industry Canada and Health Canada—makes the final decisions on funding. Each year, it approves up to 167 Vanier scholars for funding based on the recommendations endorsed by the Selection Board.

When can the award be taken up?

Once notified of their results, Vanier scholars who have already begun a doctoral program must take up their award the following May, if they:
  • are studying at the Canadian nominating university; or
  • are studying at a Canadian university and will be transferring to a doctoral program at the Canadian nominating university.
Students at Canadian universities with existing funding from one of the three federal granting agencies ending in August may take up their award in September.
Award recipients can take up their award in May, September or January following notification of their results, if they:
  • have not yet started a doctoral program of study; or
  • will be transferring from a doctoral program at an international university to a doctoral program at the Canadian nominating university.

Supplementary Funding

Vanier CGS recipients who are citizens or permanent residents of Canada may also be eligible for supplementary funding. Please visit the following websites to view available opportunities:
